The Choir

Choir Composition

St. George’s choir is made up of children (trebles) and adults, and currently has 34 members. The organist and choirmaster is Rick Morgan, who began in July 2005.

The trebles enter the choir at age seven or eight as probationers and are part of the team from the outset, learning and singing the same music as the adults. Trebles are paid an honorarium each month, depending on attendance and experience. The adults are all volunteer members.

The choir sings at the main service each Sunday (at 10:30am) from September through mid-June. In addition, the choir sings at many special services throughout the year.

Choir Trip to England

St. George’s choir will sing the daily services in Lincoln Cathedral, England, from August 8 to 14, 2011. Evensong will be sung each weekday, and on the last Sunday, we will sing Morning Prayer, the Eucharist and Evensong. Construction of the cathedral started in 1072, and was largely finished by 1200 and is huge — with great acoustics and a great pipe organ. Why not join the choir and be a part of this amazing musical and worship experience! Visit the Lincoln Cathedral website: www.lincolncathedral.com

Royal School of Church Music Affiliation

St. George’s Choir has been associated with the Royal School of Church Music since 1954. The RSCM is a world-wide organization based in England, and has as its motto: “I will sing with the spirit and with the understanding also”. The RSCM sponsors an annual summer choir camp in Montreal. In the summer of 2006, two members of St George’s choir participated in this camp.

Christian Education for Trebles

Through their involvement in the choir, choristers are immersed in the liturgy and worship of the church, week by week. The music sung is selected to reflect the scripture readings and themes for each Sunday of the liturgical year. This involvement greatly strengthens and supports beliefs.

Choristers of the choir are also provided Christian Education each week through participation in Sunday School, while the congregation and adult members of the choir listen to the Sermon.

Music Education

Trebles rehearse each Wednesday and Thursday (6:30 to 8:00 pm). Many trebles also take private singing or instrumental lessons. We don’t always sing in English, so there are many opportunities for learning. Adults rehearse each Thursday (7:30pm to approximately 9:15 pm). The whole choir also rehearses each Sunday morning (beginning 9:30am) prior to the service. While the commitment of time and effort is significant, the experience is most meaningful and rewarding.

Trebles may also participate in the annual Winnipeg Music Festival, and throughout the years, many have been successful in winning trophies recognizing their outstanding achievements.

Fun Fun Fun

Being a treble at St. George’s is not all work and no play! Pizza, bowling, BBQ’s and other events are included in the fun and fellowship.
