CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

You will find the children at St. George’s gathering in the Guild Room at the back of the Parish Hall shortly before the 10:30 am Sunday service.  Once per month, we have Children’s Sunday, in which children are present and are active participants during the liturgy portion of the service. Those children who are competent readers have the opportunity to read one of the Scripture readings for the day. On Children’s Sunday, students gather on the chancel steps with the children from the choir for the children’s homily and children’s hymn and then process out to our class.

The Children’s Program at St. George’s currently includes children aged 5 through 12. Classes are currently delivered in a multi-graded single class. The Nursery program is for children under the age of 5 and meets downstairs in the Nursery room.

The curriculum followed is based on the liturgy for each week of the church year. Activities include craft projects, games, story telling, group sharing, and discussion. The children join their parents for communion most Sundays.

Throughout the year, the children learn about their community and the world and take on outreach projects to raise awareness and to support those in need.

There are special services for children during the church year as well, including a Christmas Eve Pageant and a child-centered Stations of the Cross on Good Friday.

All classes are 10:30 am every Sunday, September through to the middle of May.

*To ensure the safety and well-being of our children, all individuals working with children are required to undergo a Criminal and Child Abuse Registry check.

Nursery

Our Nursery space on the lower level is a well equipped facility and is an excellent space for our youngest members of the church to grow together in faith and community.

All classes are 10:30 am every Sunday, September through April.

*To ensure the safety and well-being of our children, all individuals working with children are required to undergo a Criminal and Child Abuse Registry check.

Adult Education

At St. George’s, we are encouraged to stretch our minds and hearts, deepening both our own faith and our understanding of Christianity. Regular education opportunities for adults occur. As well, on occasion there is a special event or guest speaker.

During Lent and at other times throught the year, our Priest presents a series from a range of topics. These are always interesting and thought-provoking, with many diverse ideas and opinions exchanged within the group.

Confirmation Class

For many Anglicans, the journey of faith includes confirmation. While it is no longer considered to be a necessary progression for baptized Anglicans, many still consider it to be an opportunity to accept the gifts of the Holy Spirit conferred at baptism. Traditionally, children at age twelve and older are prepared for confirmation through several months of instruction in Anglican doctrine. Occasionally, adults who have not already been confirmed, or those seeking to reaffirm their vows, may choose to attend confirmation classes. Throughout this process, careful consideration is given as to how one’s gifts may be used in the Christian life. Once this is completed and the responsibilities of life in the Anglican communion are accepted, the confirmand is ready to receive the sacrament of confirmation. It is the bishop who presides at this service, and laying his hands on the confirmand, prays with these words: “Strengthen, O Lord, your servant (name) with your Holy Spirit; empower him/her for your service; sustain him/her all the days of his/her life. Amen.”
